A Love for Baking

Welcome back! Everyone who knows me knows I have a giant sweet tooth and love all baked goods. So today I am sharing about my love for baking.

My love for baking all started my freshman year when I had a craving for cupcakes. I ran down to Walmart and got all the ingredients I needed (cake mix, eggs, oil, cupcake liners and premade canned frosting). I went back to my apartment and made my first batch of cupcakes. Oh, they were so good!

After that first batch I made about one batch a week and it for sure showed by the end of the year.

Come my junior year I was living in an apartment and spent a ton of time at my future husband's house. During my free time I started browsing Pinterest and became interested in making cupcakes from scratch. Over the next two years I worked on making different cupcakes. Everything from classic chocolate and fruit filled, to more adventurist margarita and monster cupcakes.

After teaching myself how to bake I have been asked by many friends and family members to make cupcakes and more recently to make cakes for special occasions. I have made my sister in laws wedding cake, first birthday cakes for both my niece and our son, and most recently made a cake to celebrate my husband's grandparents 60th wedding anniversary.

On top of teaching myself how to bake cupcakes I had some baking lessons from one of my grandmas. She taught me how to make several family recipes, but my favorite was learning how to bake pies. Pie crust can be so hard to accomplish and once she taught me it became so easy. My first Thanksgiving with my husband’s family I made a blackberry pie, it was a hit. After that I have been put in charge of baking all the pies for Thanksgiving.

This April I decided to try my hand at sourdough and started a sourdough starter. I had been wanting to make sourdough for a while because I was given some sourdough recipes from one of my aunts. She was one of the best home cooks and bakers I knew. Finally, I found the time and started the starter. It took me a couple of tries to get a starter that was doing what it was supposed to do.

Since then, I have been baking a ton a sourdough recipes. I have figured out that baking with sourdough is a lot of trial and error. I have tried several bread recipes and the best one is from How to Make Sourdough by Emmanual Hadjiandreou. I am planning to make sourdough croissants, Danishes and chocolate chip cookies, in the near future.

Being in the kitchen making meals and baked goods is one of my favorite things, plus it's much easier to keep an eye on a two-year-old from our kitchen than when I am in my sewing room. I cannot wait to share new and old recipes with y’all. Please let me know in the comments what kind of recipes you would like to see.
