Howdy friends! Thanks for coming back. Today I am going to share with you how I started quilting and how I got to where I am today.
In high school I had a friend who was in a quilting 4-H club and I went with her to one of the meetings. After the first meeting I joined the club, bought fabric and started my very first quilt. I went to several meetings and worked on the quilt.
Unfortunately, after school started back up that fall, I got so busy between sports, applying for college, FFA and other 4-H clubs, that the quilt and the quilting 4-H club got pushed to the back burner and forgotten. Needless to say I never finished the quilt and donated it to a local charity that makes quilts for foster children.
During my first two years of college, I would periodically visit my grandparents. When I was there my grandmother and I would sew. I created a couple quilted throw pillows that I still cherish to this day. After spending those trips at my grandparents making pillows, I completely fell in love with sewing.
When I moved to Lubbock, Texas to go to school at Texas Tech, one of my husbands grandmothers helped me get a part time job at The Sewing Studio, where she worked.
Shortly after I started working at the quilt store, I started collecting fabric to create my first completed quilt. Once I had all the fabric and tools (notions) I needed to make a quilt I borrowed an old sewing machine from my mother-in-law and started sewing. It took me several weeks to complete that quilt. I was so excited to finish it and could not wait to begin another project.
That first Christmas my husband or then boyfriend bought me my own sewing machine. Pretty sure that was and still is the best Christmas present I have received. I still use that machine today.
I worked at the quilt shop for about five years. During those five years I learned so much about quilting and I honestly think it was such a good experience that molded my love for quilting. I also found a group of ladies who get together and sew once a month and they have become some of my closest friends.
Shortly after I was done working for the store, I started cross stitching. I started because I wanted something to do while on long road trips and relaxing at our family's cabin. I just recently started cross stitching at home while watching TV in the evenings.
Over the years I have fallen in love with traditional scrappy and applique quilts. I cannot wait to make more. Over the past couple years, I have been working on a ton of baby quilts for friends and family. I have always tried to only have one or two projects going at a time but that gets difficult especially when making baby quilts.
Currently I am working on a Christmas quilt, a block of the month quilt from Scarborough Fabrics which is a local quilt shop, and a Halloween cross stitch project. I cannot wait to make more quilts and share them with you along the way.
Love reading your blog!
I still love to hear your quilting story
