Welcome back friends! Just wanted to pop on here and give you a quick update on what is happening on the ranch.
Fall Work Preparation
Right now, we are getting ready for our fall work. For the fall work my husband and I have a grocery list of things we have to do to get ready in our pens and around the ranch. We will start by going through our supplies checking to ensure we have enough needles, syringes and medicine. After that we will ensure all our hot shots are in working order and get new batteries or parts if needed. We will check how many sorting flags we have, and I know for sure we will have to buy more because they tend to disappear.
After checking all our working supplies, we will go through the pens and alleys to hang tarps, put out hay and fill water tanks. Outside of the tall pipe working pens we will have to check our intermediate catch trap fences for loose or broken wires and fix those.
An important thing for us is to go through the alleys and make sure all the gates are swinging how they need to. The alley leads to a tub which we will clean out, move rocks from the cut gate tracks, and grease. We will also clean, grease, and check the hydraulic system on the chute.
Calves
During the fall work we wean all our spring calves. We will put blue tags in the bull calves ears and pink in the heifers. After we work the heifers will go in one pen, the bulls in another and we will feed them till they are sold.
Not only are we getting ready to wean our spring calves we are also finishing calving our late calvers for the year. We currently have a ton of little red dots running around this year. It is so fun to see the calves running around the pasture. The only downside is the little calves make working the bison a little slower because we try to make sure the red dots are safe.
Planting
Right after the fall work we will start planting our pivots in wheat for winter grazing and to hay in the spring. So, we are currently checking the tractors and getting the disc and planter ready to be used. We are also clearing space in the barn to put seed when it arrives.
Fall is always a busy time for us between fall works, Texas Tech football games, fall stock shows, planting and just everyday life. It can get crazy but I would not change it for anything.
Love this!!
